'Beast, Beauties & Beliefs' — young people showcase their art

29th November 2018 by Scott Lawrence

This summer Dumps Adventure Playground hosted Arts Fest 2018. The collaboration with Talk About Art... provided Lewisham young people with the opportunity to work alongside professional artists in a studio environment from 30th July to 3rd August.

The intensive five day experience saw participants working from 10.00am–4.00pm as they were introduced to different established artists as sources of inspiration. Young people were encouraged to create their own work in a variety of media from charcoal to mod roc, meanwhile working with a filmmaker to discuss and analyse their work. Many of the participants commented on the “freedom” they were given to explore and create art with one young person continuing: “I was given access to a lot of materials I wouldn’t normally use.”.

The result of this cumulated in  'Beast, Beauties & Beliefs’ — an exhibition from 13th-27th November — showcasing the outstanding talent of these young artists at Lewisham Library, along with their filmed responses. We are now exploring where we can show this exhibition early next year.

Thank you to all our participants, staff and Let’s Talk About Art for the fun and rewarding project.

This was the first of what is likely to be many more exciting collaborations between Youth First and Talk About Art... so watch this space for more in 2019!
