Youth voice increased on Board after December elections

18th December 2018 by Scott Lawrence

On 14th December Harri-Jade Martin and Trey Brown were elected as Youth Directors for 2018/19 for Youth First. They join Amy West (running a second-year term) and Rhiannon Montague (2017 candidate and Young Advisor).

Youth Directors are young people who play both an active and an official legal role within the structure of Youth First.

308 young people voted for their first and second choice of Youth Director between Thursday 6th and 13th December. Our ten directly managed sites acted as polling stations after seven candidates spent a week campaigning across the youth clubs and adventure playgrounds.

Back in March at the Youth First 2018 AGM motions were passed to increase youth representation on our Board:

  • Doubling the amount of Youth Directors from two to four;
  • Increasing the maximum Youth Director age to 25;
  • and, allowing a second-year term for Youth Directors that want it

Not only are these 2018 elections a big win for youth voice but ensure each Youth Director has the opportunity to make real lasting change in the organisation, as they contribute for up to 24 months.

The two newly elected Youth Directors shared 49% of the "First choice" votes cast by young people and 41% of total votes.

Thank you to all young people that participated in the elections - we’re excited to see our new Youth Directors get involved!
