Business development focused deputy CEO needed to help drive our growth
Youth First was born from the passion of youth and play workers to create a means to sustain and ideally grow youth work, first in Lewisham and now beyond. We are looking for a self-reliant Deputy CEO to join our team and really make an impact on the development of the business and achieving this mission.
Over the next 5 years we want to substantially grow and diversify our impact and income streams, extending the reach of our youth work across more delivery types and a broader geographical area. You will be expected to develop and maintain current and future plans for this growth, with the confidence to put these plans in to action. You will identify opportunities based on organisational priorities and operational capabilities, leading on bids and funding applications with potential partners and major donors.
You will have experience of working with Boards and the necessary diplomacy and confidence that go with successfully managing these and other relationships. You will participate as an Executive Trustee in Board meetings, regularly reporting performance and impact data on the organisation’s business development plan.
This can be a demanding role which requires resilience. Our work is based in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England. The young people who use our services are too often fighting against life situations that hold them back. A visit to our offices at the Bellingham Gateway Youth and Community Centre will give you a good taste for the services we offer and an understanding of their importance in the community. We have a talented and diverse team who are working in a demanding sector and this will sometimes be reflected in your interactions with the people you will work with.
Whilst not expected to be an expert in youth services, ideally you will have experience at Director level in an inner city, service oriented charity or other public sector organisation with demonstrable track record of achievement in service business development. You should also be able to demonstrate an understanding and empathy for the challenges young people face. Experience of working with Councils or a solid understanding of winning public sector bids is essential. A certain amount of flexibility will be necessary to really get an understanding of the services we offer, many of which occur outside normal office hours.
This position would suit someone who is at Director level, ready to take the next step in their career. In return we are offering a challenging role with the opportunity to build and implement plans that will make a real difference to the organisation.
Those who use our services are from diverse backgrounds and we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applicants from all parts of the community.
Formed in September 2016 out of Lewisham Council's youth service, Youth First is currently a community benefit society that is truly young person centred. The impact of cuts and financial pressures across the public sector has seen a reduction in more traditional youth provision. As a result we are currently looking to transfer to become a Charitable incorporated organisation within the year. Despite the change we will seek to still retain the power of staff and youth voice in how we plan and operate. In short Youth First offers a means to sustain and ideally grow impactful youth work to ensure young people regardless of background have the best life chances
We want this role to help secure, sustain and grow Youth First for the future, this includes ensuring a diversity of income across a strong portfolio of funding across new contracts, grants and traditional fund raising. We hope that within the next couple of years that this will ensure we are not reliant on any one, single funder and have increased our operations and reach both within and outside of Lewisham.
